Published on March 10, 2026 – Updated on April 10, 2026
Could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hello, my name is Minh-Quan THAI.
I am a faculty member at the University of Transport and Communications in Hanoi, Vietnam.
I was invited to Polytech Clermont (INP) for a ten-day work visit with Prof. AbdelHamid BOUCHAIR from the Civil Engineering Department.
I am particularly interested in civil engineering, especially materials and structures applied to transportation infrastructure.
I enjoy learning new working methods and discovering different scientific and cultural approaches.
What motivated you to come to France?
I have always greatly admired the quality of teaching and research in France. It is also a country with a rich scientific culture and a strong international openness.
I have already had the chance to study in France, first for my Master’s degree and then for my PhD, which had a significant impact on me academically and personally.
However, I had never been to Clermont-Ferrand before, and this visit is a great opportunity for me to discover the city and engage with new colleagues in a stimulating and multicultural environment.
What are you currently working on at Polytech Clermont?
I am currently collaborating with Professor AbdelHamid BOUCHAIR from the Civil Engineering Department at Polytech Clermont. We are working together on research ideas regarding the application of new technologies in materials and structures, particularly for the repair and strengthening of existing bridges.
We have also discussed potential internship topics, allowing Polytech Clermont students to undertake internships in Vietnam, either at my university or in civil engineering companies.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to teach a course to fourth-year Civil Engineering students on methods for inspecting, assessing, repairing, and reinforcing old bridges in Vietnam.
I also conducted a research seminar for my colleagues at INP – Civil Engineering Department to present my research topics and those of my collaborators in Vietnam.
What differences do you notice between your country and France in your field?
In France, I have noticed greater autonomy given to students and researchers.
There are also many funding opportunities dedicated to research projects, allowing researchers to recruit students for internships or doctoral theses.
Additionally, researchers often receive strong support to participate in international conferences or to conduct work stays at other universities.
This organization fosters a dynamic and collaborative research environment, which is a great source of inspiration for me.
What do you appreciate the most since your arrival?
I greatly appreciate the kindness of people and the spirit of mutual support at the university.
I would like to especially thank Professor AbdelHamid BOUCHAIR from the Civil Engineering Department at Polytech Clermont, as well as his colleagues, for their warm welcome and constant support throughout my stay.
I also enjoy the cultural richness of France — the gastronomy, landscapes, and the way of enjoying life. And of course, the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world.
A message for students or colleagues?
I would like to tell my colleagues and students to always maintain curiosity and a passion for learning.
Working together, sharing our experiences and cultures, is what makes our journey even more rewarding.
I hope that one day you will have the opportunity to come to Vietnam, to discover the country and interact directly with us. Please do not hesitate to contact me before your visit — here is my email address: minhquan.thai@utc.edu.vn
It will always be a great pleasure to welcome my colleagues and the students from Polytech Clermont!
