[With the United States] Meeting with Matthew Gombeda from the Illinois Institute of Technology
Recently arriving at Polytech Clermont, Matthew (Matt) Gombeda is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, United States. His research and teaching focus on concrete materials, mechanical behavior, and the design of concrete structures, a field crucial for the safety and durability of infrastructure.
An Academic Journey Between the United States and France
Professor and researcher in the United States, Matthew Gombeda supervises the "Concrete Materials and Structures" laboratory at IIT, where he develops applied research projects on concrete materials and structures. His visit to Polytech Clermont is part of an international framework: he was invited as a visiting professor to teach a course on blast-resistant structural design, deliver a research seminar, and supervise a Polytech Clermont student who will visit IIT in Spring 2026.
"This visit is a unique opportunity to share knowledge and collaborate on joint research projects while discovering the French educational system and scientific culture."
Applied Expertise on Concrete Projects
During his stay, Matthew Gombeda collaborated with Chaimaa Jaafari and a PRD (Doctoral Research Project) student on a prefabricated concrete wall panel project. He will also work with another student on ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), an innovative material offering exceptional strength and durability.
Observations on Civil Engineering in France
Matthew notes some interesting differences between France and the United States in his field:
"At Polytech Clermont, many faculty specialize in timber structures, which is less common at IIT. I also appreciate how faculty gather on campus for meetings, seminars, and meals – it’s a great way to stay connected with colleagues."
He is also impressed by the students’ level and quality of training:
"Students are very well prepared for their future careers in civil and structural engineering. Their engagement in class is remarkable."
An Appreciation for France and Its Hospitality
Matthew highlights the ease of public transportation in Clermont-Ferrand and other European cities visited, as well as the warm welcome from his colleagues:
"I sincerely thank Polytech Clermont for its invitation and hospitality. I hope we can continue our collaborations in the future."
A Message to Students and Colleagues
To students and researchers, Matthew Gombeda offers a clear message:
"Take every opportunity to learn, exchange ideas with your colleagues, and explore new concepts. International collaboration is a unique chance to grow both professionally and personally."
